Emmy’s Preview 2019

With the 71st Emmy’s coming up on September 22, we thought it would be helpful to resurface some tips for publishers to help prepare you for a solid award season, kicking off with the Emmy’s and what you should know to capture that audience of over 10 million viewers.  As always, it’s good to know what shows and networks are nominated, what cultural moments and issues will likely be buzzed about leading up to, during, and/or after the event, and how to get ahead of it all.

Most Likely to be Discussed:

  • No host – this Emmy’s will not have a host for the fourth time in Emmy’s history
  • Pop TV received its first primetime Emmy nomination with Schitt’s Creek
  • Political tension with 2020 election, focus on social issues such as racism and sexism

Most Nominated Shows and Networks: 

Nothing on TV caused more buzz this year than Game of Thrones and Ava Duvarney’s When they See Us. Expect some buzz on how the last season of GOT ended (more on that here) and how When they See Us changed the lives of the “exonerated five” including Donald Trump’s involvement.

HBO’s Game of Thrones is nominated for the most awards (14 nominations), breaking a previously held record by NYPD Blue for most nominations within the same year.  Netflix’s When They See Us comes in second with 11 nominations. The five networks in the lead with the most nominations are HBO (GOT, Barry, Chernobyl, Veep), Netflix (When They See Us, Ozark, Russian Doll, Bodyguard), Prime Video (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag), NBC (This is Us, SNL, The Good Place) and Showtime (Escape at Dannemora, Who is America?) respectively. 

It’s worth noting that Netflix and Prime Video are creeping up and nearly crushing long-standing networks with their content.
